I hope you all have had a great Christmas and are looking forward to some new adventures in 2008.

We have had some decent rainfall events so far this year with certain areas almost (dare I say it) having too much.

Some of the later planted corn crops have suffered the worst: with water laying on the ground the seed just rotted.  There have been some replants, which are now up and doing well.

The earlier planted crops are looking fantastic as they approach maturity.  On the NSW North Coast, the overcast, high humidity conditions have bought on the onset of Northern Leaf Blight in some areas.

This again highlights the importance of choosing the right hybrid for your area.

Hycorn 675IT and Hycorn 901 certainly fit well on the late plant.

Conditions have certainly given the forage sorghum crops a kick along lately.  You need to be on the ball with management of forages as the taller the crop gets, generally the less feed quality they will have.

With the wet conditions, unfortunately we can’t get the animals on to graze which results in crops missing the ideal window.  Due to this, I would encourage you to think about ensiling some of these paddocks for use during the winter.

Driving through my region this week it’s good to see so many Pacific Seeds crops doing well.

We are approaching the autumn plant and when you turn over the page you will see some winter forage varieties that I am recommending for this coming season as well as some wheat varieties that may interest you.

I look forward to catching up with you in my travels around my territory in the future.

Regards,

Brad Jamieson
