Dallas has found that in the right season Superdan is an ideal alternative to use. In this instance it was getting to late to sow a useful oaten crop and starting again with a dryland lucerne crop was not an option.
By using Superdan, Dallas was able to generate large volumes of feed off a relatively small area. The Superdan was able to access the available nitrogen the lucerne stand put back into the soil and also act as weed competition and keep the block clean.
The crop was not grazed but rather used for a single bulky hay cut. Off one of the 8ha blocks 227 big bales (8x3) were removed. This is well above estimates of more than 160 bales, made when the photos were taken.
